From Our Writers:
Just imagine the scene at the White House as news of the insurrection in Iran comes across Twitter and Facebook: "Why didn't they listen to me. I didn't go to Cairo to apologize for nothing. I want to solve the problems in the Middle East. Not some punks rioting in the streets of Tehran."
Many in the state-run media have been wondering why Mr. Obama's response to the political upheaval in Iran is so measured and delayed. Shouldn't the United States be at the forefront of supporting democracy and regime change in Iran?
Under Presidents Reagan and Bush, the United States would be at the forefront, but Mr. Obama has a different plan. The worst thing that could happen to the Obama plan is to have President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad removed from office. Mr. Obama needs him. So do the Russians and General Electric.
It's been said that Mr. Obama is a Palestinian sympathizer. He may see the so-called Palestinians as victims, the way the left in the U.S. sees all minorities as victims. We also know there is a virulent strain of anti-Semitism that runs through the left.
Given Obama's education and background, it seems he has as an endgame, the destruction of Israel. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran is a key player in that endgame, too.
Ahmadinejad and Obama can force the Israelis to the table to negotiate a peace where Israelis consents to a two state solution, the division of Jerusalem, and maybe even consent to some elements of a law of return.
What follows from that peace will be the end of Israel. This so called peace agreement will be even easier to get if Iran has a nuclear bomb, something Mr. Obama has already accepted.
A regime change in Iran would be the worse thing that could happen to Obama's peace plan. A regime change in Iran holds out the possibility of victory for Israel.
It also holds out other possibilities. No more Iranian funding of Hamas. No more Palestinian demands for Jerusalem. No more tension in the Arab world. Iran may even give up its desire to have atomic weapons.
All of this may be accomplished without any input from Obama. Young people in the streets of Tehran could do it with support from the United States. But just watch. Behind the scenes, by not "meddling," Obama works to keep Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in power.
