Here’s how “illegal” this “terrible precedent” was: president Manuel Zelaya had ordered a national referendum on the country’s constitution with the idea of doing away with the one-term limit for that nation’s presidency.  He asked the head of the armed forces, Gen. Romeo Vasquez, to back the move.  The general declined, so he was fired.  The Supreme Court ruled against the general’s ouster but Zelaya ignored them and pressed on with his intention to do away with presidential term limits.

 

        The congress, the courts, and the military were having none of it.  They put Zelaya on a plane to Costa Rica and selected Roberto Micheletti–a civilian–to be INTERIM president until regularly scheduled elections occur next November.

 

        For an in-the-tank American media, taking its cue from Obama, this represented a “military coup.”  Really?  So what would one call it if Gen. Vasquez had, in fact, decided to back Zelaya’s extra-legal maneuverings?  What if the Honduran military had been willing to thwart the courts, the congress and the constitution and back Zelaya’s president-for-life ambitions?

 

        Here’s a clue: besides Barack Obama, the two leaders responding with equally heavy criticism regarding this turn of events are none other than Venezuela’s president-for-life Hugo Chavez and Cuba’s totalitarian dictator Fidel Castro.

 

        Obama, Chavez, and Castro.  The “Three Amigos” of “progressive” politics.  Two freedom-crushing goons and a narcissist whose ''wait-and-see'' waffle gave the murdering mullahs of Iran time to annihilate any move towards freedom in that country, even as he demands the government of Honduras reinstate yet another politician with grandiose--and illegal--ambitions.

 

       Here’s your ''hope'' and ''change,'' America.  Here’s a president who aligns himself with thugs and murderers in order to “restore America’s reputation” on the world stage.  Here’s a man so bereft of humility and so ignorant of history that America’s previously unwavering commitment to freedom takes a back seat to maintaining “personal relationships” with some of the worst actors on the planet.  Here is the embodiment of progressivism’s moral bankruptcy, where nothing is concrete save that which makes one “feel good,” regardless of consequences.

 

       America used to be a nation of principles.  Now everything is “negotiable.”  Iran destroys democracy even as Honduras preserves it, and the president of the United States is one hundred and eighty degrees out of phase with both developments.

 

       Shame on him.  And shame on all of his enablers in government and the media whose idea of ingratiating America with the rest of the world is not raising the bar of principled expectations, but finding the lowest common denominator of “mutual understanding” with scoundrels and scumbags.

 

        We’re far better than that.  At least we used to be.
