The ABC series on Moses and the Ten Commandments
By Charlotte Baker | Published  04/12/2006
Did Islam come into being, because Muhammad wanted to become the new Moses? What stood out for me in ABC's "docudrama" - THE TEN COMMANDMENTS - was how much a lot of the episodes of Moses' life were strikingly similar to aspects of Muhammad's life. The formerly peaceful, spiritual guy suddenly realizes that he will have to morph into a fierce desert warrior in order to conquer his way into the land promised by "the one God" to his (unnamed in ABC's presentation) "people - tribe." Next, he becomes the fountain of all wisdom for his followers, has apparently painful headaches at the onset of each new revelation or message from "the one God," and even even has to remove himself from the people, either by going out alone into the desert, or by ascending Mt. Zion in order to receive these communications. I can't imagine what Muslim advisors to the ABC Ten Commandment production (who surely participated in the scriptwriting) thought, as to the way in which Judeo-Christian viewers would perceive the portrayal of the Hebrew hero, but it occurred to me rather soon after the revolt against the pharoah and departure of Moses' "tribe" into the desert, that many episodes could just as well have been depicted in a docudrama of the founder of Islam's exploits ...........and I have no doubt that we're soon going to see precisely such a 4-hour show on one of the alphabet channels..........a thoroughly sanitized, glossy extravaganza of a man who was in reality a mentally disturbed desert bandit. The message might be something like, "Well.......you had your Moses, but we had the historically newer, truer messenger from the one God, whose real name is Allah." As a matter of fact, I would be astonished if Hollywood isn't already working on such a production, under the heavy "guidance" of CAIR, MPAC and no doubt many internationally based "Muslim scholars." (read "propagandists"). It is the logical next step, after this inexcusably biased account of Moses, which never once mentions that Moses is leading God's chosen people - the Hebrews (Jews) back to their promised land from which they had been expelled and driven into slavery 400 years before the Exodus from Egypt. My main point is that the Mosaic legend had been a social, tribal, regional constant for a thousand years. Old Testament, biblical stories weren't confined only to the Hebrew people. Everyone knew them. They travelled throughout the known world via all of the trade routes. Therefore, of course this evil, sinister man, Muhammad knew the Moses legend also. What he did, in my opinion (and after having viewed the ABC production) is to set out to become the new, improved Moses. He produced a bastardized, ugly, distorted version of the life of Moses - both as the victorious desert warrior, the herald of "the one God," and the supreme law giver. The similarities between the life of Moses and the life of Muhammad are startling in the sense that it is clear that Muhammad's historical rival was NOT Jesus, but Moses. Jack Englehard's review on NewsBusters.com, "Was Moses Jewish? Not on ABC," is well worth reading.
